"How To Receive The Word Of God"
James 1:21-27

Note: This outline comes from a sermon by Dr. James Coggin pastor at Travis Avenue Baptist Church, Fort Worth, Texas in 1980.

Introduction: It is not enough to know the Bible. We must receive it, i,e., like receiving and welcoming a friend. Receiving the Word brings deliverance, v.21.

We are to receive the Word of God with…

I. CONTRITENESS, v.21

A. This is humility and a teachable spirit. You can be backslidden with a Bible under your arm.

B. This is more important than having a brilliant mind.

C. Sin will keep you from the Book, i.e., "filthiness" and "overflowing wickedness", but the Book will help keep you from sin.

We are to receive the Word of God with…

II. COMPLIANCE, v.21

"With meekness" implies a readiness to comply.

A. In every area of life...John 2, "Whatever He says unto you do it".

B. At all times...Without excuse or dispute.

C. Without exception i.e., no "cafeteria" religion where you "pick and choose".

We are to receive the Word of God with…

III. CONFORMITY, vs. 22-25

A. When the Word is not making you more like Christ you are deceiving yourself, v. 22.

B. God does not give us truth simply to satisfy our curiosity or merely illuminate our minds, but to show us who we really are in God’s sight, vs. 23-24.

C. Conformity to God’s Word brings God’s blessings, v. 25

Conclusion: Receiving The Word Of God Influences…

1. Our Conversation, v. 26

2. Our Caring, v. 27

3. Our Cleanliness, v. 27
