"The Believer And The Body"
James 2:1-13

Introduction: In chapter one James defines the basic qualities of the Christian life. In chapters 2-5 he gives a detailed explanation of them. God’s love for and concern for the lost and helpless is the basis for our priority concern for needy man. James paints a picture of two men going to church and draws several principles from it. Please note…

I. The Rebuke For Partiality, vs. 1-4

A. The Principle Of Partiality Is Declared, v.1. James had seen and heard of these occasions of shunning or looking down on others. He wanted them to know that a man’s worth is not determined by his wallet.

B. The Practice Of Partiality Is Depicted, vs. 2-3. Some were seated in seats of honor while others were relegated to the "back of the bus".

C. The Prohibition Of Partiality Is Disclosed, v.4. The ground is level at the foot of the cross. The poor were being denied while the rich were being distinguished.

II. The Results Of Partiality, vs. 5-11

A. Partiality Belittles God’s Love, vs. 5-7. "Blessed are the poor in spirit…, Matt 5:3. "A man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things he possesses…", Luke 12:15.

B. Partiality Breaks God’s Law, vs. 8-9. It is nothing less than sin.

C. Partiality Breaches God’s Limits (Brings God’s Judgement), vs. 10-11. The Jews viewed the Law with "greater" and "lesser" degrees, ignoring some and holding to others. God always judges sin.

III. The Requirement Of God Regarding Partiality, vs. 12-13.

A. The Requirement Expressed, v.12, The unbreakable law of accountability is in place. "Act like judgement is coming".

B. The Requirement Explained, v. 13a. I am grateful that I was shown mercy and lifted out of my lost estate. Dare I do less for those around me? The lack of love lived out is the scandal of the church.

C. The Requirement Exercised, v.13b.

When we stand before the Lord will we be glad for how we treated others? What if God loved us as we love others? The Lord is no respecter of persons. He loves us all.
