Ministry Update

FROM MY HEART

Jackie KayJust what is "an evangelist for the church"? Every God-called evangelist is an evangelist for the church according to Ephesians 4:11. He is called to come alongside the pastor, to compliment and strengthen the pastor’s ministry, and to assist the pastor in maturing the saints and equipping them for ministry. The evangelist is to promote the harmony and unity within the church, v. 13, and to help the church work together more effectively, v.16. The evangelist is to partner with the pastor to encourage and equip the people to walk a godly walk, v.17, and to be an agent to help bring reconciliation and "sweetness" to the fellowship, vs. 25-32. The evangelist is to do all of the above and call the lost to repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, Acts 4:12.

Is there a need for evangelists in the church today? Well, certainly there is! When I was a pastor I used evangelists often and always had a wonderful experience. My church was blessed and strengthened, the lost were reached, and our people were encouraged and motivated in their walk with the Lord.

Why, then, have many churches stopped having revivals or seldom use evangelists? I think there are several reasons. One, many in some areas of the modern church growth movements no longer see the need or benefit of revivals and/or evangelists. Two, some pastors have heard "horror" stories about evangelists who preached almost entirely on "lost church members" and left their people confused and full of doubt. Three, some evangelists have promoted their own ministries, or were "pushy" with regard to finances. Fourth, some evangelists come across as "aloof" and do not seem genuinely interested in ministering to the people.

Regrettably, some of these concerns have been valid with regard to a few who have abused the sacred trust a pastor places in an evangelist. But, the vast majority of e men I know in evangelism are men who are humble, wonderfully gifted, and sincerely want to be a blessing to the pastor and the church. And I believe that the evangelist has an important role in the church in the twenty first century.

Pastor, I urge you, whether you are in a large church or one not-so-large, to use evangelists. They will be a blessing to you and your people.

I want to renew my commitment to all who receive this Praise Report, those of you that I know personally and those I haven’t had the privilege of getting to know yet, to always...

1. Be a man of integrity in my personal walk, my financial dealings, and my ministry.

2. Honor the pastor and build him up before his people.

3. Avoid personal promotion.

4. Seek to leave a church happier, more healthy, and more holy than when I came.

5. Be a friend, encourager, and assistant to the pastor.

6. Preach the Word with conviction and compassion.

7. Trust the Holy Spirit to bring conviction and never try to manipulate the invitation for "numbers" sake.

Pastor, if you have not scheduled a revival in your church this year, I urge you to do so. If you have not invited an evangelist to be with you, I urge you to do so. You will be pleased, the people will be blessed, and the Lord will be honored. Most evangelists still have excellent dates for 2008 available and would be honored to be with you and your dear people.

I want to ask you to note the wonderful testimonies that pastors have been so kind to share on our web site. I was a pastor for many years and I understand the heartaches as well as the joys, the stresses as well as the blessings of being a pastor. Pastor, I pray Heaven’s richest blessings upon you, and your good ministry and I hope to have the honor of being with you in revival soon.

Ministry Emphases God Has Blessed

While the ministry of evangelism and encouragement through local church revivals is the heart of our ministry, I have been blessed to see the Lord honor other dimensions of this ministry as well.

MEN’S MINISTRY: It was such a joy to be a part of this year’s Men’s Ministry at our church, FBC, Millington. Approximately 220 men participated in the two day event. When I share with men I am acutely aware that the four greatest challenges most men face are pride, sexual purity, success, and being a godly husband and father. I have found that character studies from the Bible of the lives of men are very powerful messages to men. Some of the themes the Lord has blessed include…

- "How To Affair-Proof Your Marriage" (From the life of David)

- "Principle of Purity" (Proverbs 5)

- "The Man God Is Looking For" (Ezekiel and Joseph)

- "Passing The Tests Of Life" (Joseph)

- "A Portrait of a Successful Man" (Joseph)

- "The Kind Of Lover Your Wife Needs" (Ephesians)

- "The High Cost Of Compromise" (Lot)

- "Navigating The Minefield Of Fatherhood" (without getting blown up)

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCES: It has been my privilege to lead many leadership conferences for pastors in the area of effective Sunday School leadership, deacons, and/or staff. Having pastored a growing church of 1,200 to 1,500 in weekly attendance and led a multiple staff as well as having served in much smaller settings I seek to communicate timeless biblical principles which work in any church setting.

MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT CONFERENCES/REVIVALS: I have had the joy of leading several Family/Marriage Revivals where each service we would focus on the family. Some of the messages include…

-"Living In The Hanoi Hilton" (Overcoming communication challenges in marriage) Note: I borrowed the title from a great message I heard Gil McKee preach when he was at Highland in Florence several years ago.

- "How To Survive Parenthood"

- "Until Debt Do Us Part" (Financial freedom for families)

- "Reviving Romance In Marriage"

- "What Do We Have Here?" (Helping couples understand each other)

- "Termites In Your Troth" (The little things that "eat away" at a marriage)

- "The Ten Commandments of a Happy Home"

- "Building Your Dream Home"...and others.

I was honored when one pastor, Jim Blaylock, at Corinth Baptist Church in London, KY, where I have been in three revivals, told me he was going to ask every couple planning to get married to listen to the messages I preached there on the home.

REVIVALS: It is this ministry of evangelism and encouragement that I enjoy most.

The Top Ten Reasons Why Your Church Needs Revival

This may sound like a rather presumptuous title for an article until you understand that the reasons your church needs revival are the same reasons every church needs revival. Your church needs revival because…

1. Many families in your church are struggling with conflict, financial stress, marital stress, parenthood, and more.

2. Many in your church are discouraged because of life events, crises, difficulties, etc.

3. There are those in your church struggling with doubt about their salvation. Note: I emphasize principles of assurance...not doubt.

4. There are more broken relationships in your church than most people realize.

5. There are many among lay leadership, staff, and even pastors who have lost their vision and enthusiasm for the Lord’s work.

6. There are those in your church caught in the trap of pornography, infidelity, and/or other immoral lifestyles.

7. There are issues in your church that are very difficult for a pastor, who knows what is going on, to address without alienating some members.

8. Even pastors need "times of refreshing" for their ministries.

9. There are lost people in your congregation every week who desperately need to know the Lord. Sometimes a new voice can lend them a new perspective on their need to be saved.

10. Your church, as every church, desperately needs God’s wind of revival to awaken men from lethargy, complacency, and compromise. May the Lord send revival to His church.
